The set of works by Paula Rego held in the Serralves Collection, produced between 1975 and 2004, will be the starting point for a monographic exhibition entitled "Paula Rego. The Cry of Imagination.”
This exhibition will bring the artist back to Serralves after the major exhibition organised by the Museum in 2004. The new exhibition will be presented in Serralves Villa and includes representative works from various periods of the artist's oeuvre, that has defined a new paradigm in Portuguese contemporary painting.
"Paula Rego. The Cry of Imagination” also includes two series of prints, "Pendle Witches” (1996) and "Shakespeare's ”(2006) from the Paula Rego House of Stories’ collection, which reinforce the background to this exhibition, which focuses on the ability of art, in particular through its figurative aspect, to reveal universes in which surprise and amazement are anchored in the most basic and fundamental yearnings of contemporary society, are related to the role of women in this context and, finally, explore the ability of art to question day-to-day life.
Exhibition organised by the Serralves Foundation - Museum of Contemporary Art and curated by Marta Almeida.
