Since the early 1980s, Rui Sanches has been developing one of the most outstanding oeuvres in the field of Portuguese sculpture. His work, solidly anchored in extensive knowledge of art history, questions and reinvents the classical assumptions of sculpture, through the development of basic construction principles and the constant use and combination of wood and wood substitutes (in particular plywood) with other materials (iron, aluminium, mirror, plaster, etc.).
In Annunciation, wooden modules are assembled in a conversation area, thereby suggesting a permanent tension between the geometric and the organic, in a precarious and unsettling equilibrium. The artist aims to bridge the gap between classicism and contemporaneity by recalling one of the most important themes of medieval and Renaissance art – the announcement by the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she will conceive and become the mother of Jesus Christ – that features in the repertoire of almost all great masters (e.g. Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio).
Rui Sanches lives and works in Lisbon. His work is represented in different national and international collections, including the José de Azeredo Perdigão Modern Art Centre, FCG, Lisbon, Serralves Foundation, Porto, Van Hedendaagse Kunst Museum, Antwerp, Extremaduran and Latin American Museum of Contemporary Art, Badajoz, Funchal Contemporary Art Museum – Fort of São Tiago, Elvas Contemporary Art Museum, Ministry of Culture, European Parliament (Portugal), Luso-American Development Foundation, Lisbon, and the Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon.
