THROUGH THE… | ANA VIEIRA IN THE SERRALVES COLLECTION IN BARCELOS
from 06 DEC 2019 to 29 JAN 2020
Ana Vieira (Coimbra, 1940 — Lisbon, 2016) is one of the most relevant Portuguese artists from the period spanning the 1960s to recent years. The Serralves Collection includes some her works in various media — objects, installation, photography, print —, which reflect the diversity of her practice and the pioneering character of her critique of the central place accorded to traditional art media — painting and sculpture — in art production.
This exhibition allows for a revaluation of the artist’s historic role and for an understanding of the surprising relevance of her work. The objects and installation presented question the notions and stereotypes around the role of the home, and the relationship between women and home, stressing the permeability between domestic and public space, between interiority and exteriority, which has always characterized Vieira’s artistic language. ‘Through the…’ is part of the exhibition programme that celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the Serralves Collection, and the sited presentations of works from the Serralves Collection that furthers the museum’s aim of making the Collection visible and accessible to a broader public around the country.
