One of Manoel de Oliveira's favourite films, "Rebecca” was also Alfred Hitchcok's first Hollywood picture: it tells the story of a haunted house named after a woman (Manderley) and the three women who live there (two of who are nameless). An adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's well-known novel of the same name, a Gothic fable of marital terrors.

Providence

Providence is the name of the huge house where an ageing (and often drunk) writer recalls his family and uses his literature to avenge the past. His dark affective memories blur the lines between fact and fiction. Until there is an encounter (and confrontation) between his writing and life. This was French director Alain Resnais’ first English-language film, that will be screened in its recently restored version..

Marcel Hanoun

'A clinical description of reality. I insist on the word 'clinical' is how Jean-Luc Godard described this simple story of despair and motherly love. Presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959, where it won the Grand Prix Eurovision, Marcel Hanoun's debut feature film fascinated Godard and several Nouvelle Vague filmmakers due to its strong poetic dimension, resulting from the disassociation between image and sound.

Shirley Clarke

To mark the 100th anniversary of filmmaker Shirley Clarke, we will screen her famous portrayal of a black homosexual prostitute, that Ingmar Bergman considered to be "the most extraordinary film” he had ever seen. The director and her team spent 12 hours in a hotel room with Jason, and produced a moving testimony about the theatricality of life that brings us from laughter to tears (and back again).
