Members of the collective A Besta, André Calvário and João Sousa have specified the complicities engendered by several bands and projects in their duo Ácidos. They define this new adventure as a nucleus of experimental improvisation with a rock matrix, going the references of their constructions from the riffs of the so-called prog tendency (eg, King Crimson and Magma) to the stoner style of, for instance, the Kyuss, with occasional allusions to the entire history of combinations between this musical genre and jazz. For this concert they invite another duo who works in the crossed traditions of free jazz and improvised music - About Angels and Animals, formed by the saxophonists Julius Gabriel and Jan Klare, renowned for the way that they reconcile abstraction with energy, in search of an expression whose formal aspects include both spontaneous and sophisticated elements.

Fail Better! & Théo Ceccaldi - Jazz no Parque
2019-07-13
Now with Albert Cirera and Marco Franco in substitution of João Guimarães and João Pais Filipe, Fail Better! invite Théo Ceccaldi for this concert, with whom the mentor of this band, Marcelo dos Reis, has played alongside in several contexts, beginning by Chamber 4 (which also includes Luís Vicente). Ceccaldi is a young violinist who is already one of the leading musicians in the French jazz scene. The music proposed by the quintet normally combines aspects of free jazz, post-bop, rock and even folk and country, in a trans-idiomatic understanding of improvisation (no scores or combined structures) that distinguishes and personalises it. Reinforced by Ceccaldi - the greatest current exponent of the violin lineage that began with Stéphane Grapelli and has also involved Jean-Luc Ponty –, the group is likely to gain even greater, and unpredictable, dimensions.

JAZZ NO PARQUE
DE 2019-07-06 a 2019-07-20
The 28th edition of Jazz in the Park fosters collaborations between groups and Portuguese individual musicians with international artists, aiming to build stronger relationships between the Portuguese music scene and other countries. Thereby, composer and drummer Pedro Melo Alves invites the North American Mark Dresser and French Eve Risser for a new project; Fail Better! will perform with their special guest Théo Ceccaldi (France); and the duo Ácidos will perform with another duo, from Germany, About Angels and Animals, in pursuit of the universalistic ideal of jazz at the beginning of a new millennium. Always forging new paths for everyone involved, and proposing several world premieres.
Pedro Melo Alves’ in igma (Portugal / United States / France) World premiere Pedro Melo Alves: drums, electronics; Mark Dresser: double bass; Eve Risser: piano, prepared piano; Abdul Moimême: prepared electric guitar; Aubrey Johnson: vocals; Mariana Nunes: vocals; Beatriz Nunes: vocals
Winner of the Bernardo Sassetti Composition Award in 2017 and one of the most acclaimed figures of the new generation of Portuguese jazz, Pedro Melo Alves has been developing a path of musical research that combines elements of jazz and contemporary classical music. In addition to his contributions to the group, The Rite of Trio and its Omniae Ensemble, he has already been exploring these currents in the projects Symph and O. in igma is a new venture from this Porto-based musician, involving leading musicians from the international scene, such as Mark Dresser and Eve Risser. Dresser is one of the world’s leasing double bass players for almost four decades and Risser has amazingly reformulated the piano’s distinctive capacities. This musical formation, which will stage its world premiere, also includes Abdul Moimême, Portugal’s leading musician in the field of electroacoustic improvisation, and three singers with blossoming careers - Aubrey Johnson, Mariana Nunes and Beatriz Nunes – who together form a highly unusual instrumental septet.
Fail Better! & Théo Ceccaldi (Portugal / Spain / France) World premiere
Marcelo dos Reis: electric guitar; Albert Cirera: soprano and tenor saxophones; Luis Vicente: trumpet; José Miguel Pereira: double bass; Marco Franco: drums + Théo Ceccaldi (violin)
Now with a new formation - with Albert Cirera and Marco Franco in substitution of João Guimarães and João Pais Filipe - Fail Better! invite Theo Ceccaldi for this concert, with whom their mentor, Marcelo dos Reis, has played alongside in several contexts, including, in particular, Chamber 4 (which also includes Luis Vicente). Ceccaldi is a young violinist who is already one of the leading musicians in the French jazz scene. The music proposed by the quintet normally combines aspects of free jazz, post-bop, rock and even folk and country music, in a trans-idiomatic understanding of improvisation (no score or combined structures) that distinguishes and personalises it. Ácidos – André Calvário: electric bass, João Sousa: drums; About Angels and Animals – Julius Gabriel: baritone and tenor saxophones; Jan Klare: alto and bass saxophones
Members of the collective A Besta, of which both are also members of the group, Cardíaco, André Calvário and João Sousa have specified the complicities engendered by this and other musical projects in their new duo, Ácidos. They define this duo as a nucleus of experimental improvisation with a rock matrix, exploring the references of their constructions - through prog riffs (eg, King Crimson and Magma) to Kyuss-style stoner, with occasional references to the entire history of associations between this musical genre and jazz - from the Mahavishnu Orchestra to Fire! by Mats Gustafsson. For this concert they will invite another duo, on the saxophones, who work in the combined traditions of free jazz and improvised music - About Angels and Animals, formed by the musicians, Julius Gabriel and Jan Klare – who are renowned for the way that they reconcile abstraction with energy, in search of an expression whose formal aspects include both primary and sophisticated elements.

Netherlands / Australia / Brazil / Finland / Austria
Portuguese premiere Felicity Provan: vocals, trumpet; Yedo Gibson: baritone and tenor saxophones; Mikael Szafirowski: electric guitar, vocals; Luc Ex: bass guitar; Gerri Jager: drums, percussion
Naked Wolf is formed by a group of musicians from different countries who live in Amsterdam, except for the Brazilian, Yedo Gibson, who resides in Colares, in the municipality of Sintra. Their music is restless, combining jazz (mainly free jazz, although with a greater weight of composition than normally occurs in this tradition) with other musical languages - such as rock, pop and folk. The intensity of an improvisation can create a song or become something so complex that it draws close to contemporary classical music, but always with a powerful beat. It’s no accident that one of the musicians (Luc Ex) formerly played with the famous Dutch punk band The Ex.

Portuguese premiere Lucía Martínez: drums; Benjamin Weidekamp: bass clarinet; DJ lllvibe: turntables; Ronny Graupe: electric guitar; Marcel Kroemker: double bass
The Galician drummer and percussionist - who lived in Porto for several years, while pursuing her musical studies - based in Berlin is returning to Portugal to present her latest project, involving four of Berlin’s leading musicians. Her music combines the musical universe created by Ennio Morricone for the "spaghetti" movies, while alluding to other western soundtrack composers, evoking movie icons such as John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and even Quentin Tarantino. This results in an agitated, electroacoustic jazz that stampedes towards the Far West, incorporating sounds from the American heartland, honed by the European perspective of Martínez's compositions. .

DE 2018-07-07 a 2018-07-21
In the field of jazz, musicians tend to divide between a groovy sound, based on a persistently repeated pattern, or explore new musical possibilities. Special attention to the rhythmic factor frequently means that the musicians will refrain from innovating with musical styles, or vice versa. In its 2018 edition, Jazz in the Park presents three projects that counter this dichotomy between what is normally considered to be accessible and popular, and what is referred as "experimentalist". Although in different ways, all the groups performing in Serralves tennis court will produce music that will encourage listeners to tap their feet and shake their heads, combined with aesthetic visions and a nonconformist attitude. Jazz also exists beyond the mainstream and the avant-garde, and that's what we're going to hear in this year’s edition.

Slow is Possible "Hunting Weather” (Portugal) Acclaimed new Portuguese jazz group, formed by young musicians from the Beira Interior region, with prior activity primarily in the field of classical music. Slow is Possible play cinematic jazz that sometimes leads us to the writings of John Zorn intended for the big screen. A jazz without clichéd sounds, tricks or vices, that incorporates classic elements of rock and exploratory music, sustained by an intense rhythm and memorable melodies. The septet will present a project that has been specially created for Serralves, inspired by a poem by Charles Bukowski, "The Genius of the Crowd". Part of a track included in their namesake debut album, "Chasin 'Bukowski". The concert will end with the brand-new track, "Catchin' Bukowski".

Red Trio & Raoul Bjorkenheim (Portugal / Finland)
One of the most internationally acclaimed Portuguese jazz projects, Red Trio will present a concert in an electric version, replacing the group’s usual grand piano and bass with a Fender Rhodes, MiniMoog, electronic music and electric bass. In this format, the trio formed by Rodrigo Pinheiro, Hernani Faustino and Gabriel Ferrandini gains an extra "groovy" dimension that brings it closer to the world of rock. This orientation is further accentuated by the trio’s guest, Finnish guitarist Raoul Bjorkenheim, known for his work with Krakatau, recording for ECM, and with the Scorch Trio (Rune Grammofon), formed with Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love (now simply called Scorch, with the entry of Frank Rosaly and Mars Williams). Bjorkenheim follows in the wake of Red Trio’s other "special guests", such as John Butcher and Nate Wooley, in what promises to be the beginning (it's the first time that they will play together) of a new chapter in the trio’s musical career.

DE 2016-07-03 a 2016-07-17

The 25th edition of Jazz in the Park will be especially dedicated to "home-grown talent." There will be two closing concerts in this year’s edition, the first of which features a new surprising group, Slow is Possible, formed by young talented Portuguese musicians. The second closing concert features the consecrated Red Trio, which has received the highest praise from international critics. The latter will perform for the first time with the Finnish musician, Raoul Bjorkenheim, a well-known guitarist for jazz lovers. who have followed the records released by ECM and Rune Grammofon. This year’s programme has two main lines of force: the inclusion of names who have made a clear commitment to innovation and the formal freedom of their music (the brand-new group comprised by Ivo Perelman, Marcio Mattos and Antonio "Panda" Gianfratti and Red Trio, in an electric version) and the presentation of projects that give jazz a cinematic dimension (Nani García Cinemajazzia and Slow is Possible). The musicians come from Portugal, Galicia and Brazil, in a cultural framework that reflects Portuguese history (the country’s Galician-Portuguese origins and the discovery of other countries) and symbolically transports this long history to the present day.

World premiere of a Brazilian trio, that has never performed together until now, for purely geographical reasons, and will now stage a joint concert at the initiative of Jazz in the Park. Ivo Perelman moved to the United States in the early 1980s, and began to record albums that made him one of the world’s greatest contemporary tenor saxophonists. Marcio Mattos has lived in the UK for the past four decades, where he has become an important figure in the London free improvisation scene, and Antonio "Panda" Gianfratti who has remained in his home city of S. Paulo where he is seen as a key figure in the world of creative music. The first two artists have also achieved fame in the field of the fine arts - Perelman as a painter and Mattos as a potter. This concert will be completely open, revolving around the combined legacies of John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, John Stevens and Derek Bailey.

Jazz no Parque 2015 - 24th edition
DE 2015-07-05 a 2015-07-19

Because jazz is born from the intersection with other musical traditions and throughout its evolution has assimilated aspects from various musical languages, the 24th edition of Jazz in the Park positions jazz music in relation to other traditions that are either close, or very distant. The event will begin with a performance by I.Overdrive Trio who will present their own interpretation of the rock songs by Syd Barrett, which he composed for the group Pink Floyd, during their early years, and his short solo career, before retiring due to his state of dementia. This will be followed by the Human Evolution Project, of Alberto Conde and Shakir Khan, which establishes a bridge between jazz, Indian classical tradition and Galician popular music, in project that has been described under the category of world jazz, whose aim is to explore common aspects in a Eurasia, that is not as mythical a construct as it might first seem. Finally, the Hugo Carvalhais Trio (including the saxophonist Liudas Mockunas) will be joined by three percussionists from Drumming GP, for the premiere of a work with clear influences of contemporary music. Another general characteristic of the programme is the creation of the kind of impact and empathy that is more often found in an outdoor concert, in a plural offer that, besides representing the multiplicity of paths found within contemporary jazz, has the particularity of combining strong and captivating proposals for the ear.

5 jul: I.Overdrive Trio (France)
The I.Overdrive Trio was founded to develop its own interpretation of songs by Syd Barrett - founding member of Pink Floyd. Mentally affected by abuse of psychotropic drugs, he ultimately retired from the world of music to live in permanent seclusion. Subsequently, Gordiani, Gaudillat and Tocanne started to explore the music of another great composer, Leo Ferré, and also began to compose their own songs, always inspired by Syd Barrett. The resulting music is halfway between jazz and post-rock, with typical sounds of psychedelic music.

With human evolution as his guideline, the project by the Galician pianist and composer Alberto Conde and the Indian master of the sitar Shakir Khan, is inspired by the fact that the continents of Europe and Asia are essentially one and the same, in view of the elements in common between music played in the West and the East. The Human Evolution Project focuses on jazz and Indian music (and sounds from the folk tradition of Galicia, which has always been present in Alberto Conde’s compositions). The special guests are Portuguese musician, José Valente, on the viola, complemented with electronic music by the DJ, B.O.U.L.E.

Jazz in the Park 2014: Branches
2014-07-27

An ensemble specifically created for this edition of Jazz in the Park, Branches is the fruit of collaboration between two of Porto’s most dynamic musicians’ associations, each with their own specific field of activity - Porta-Jazz (jazz) and Sonoscopia (improvised and experimental music). Although the partnership is not a novelty per se, this project will extend it further and is extremely promising, since it brings together artists from different styles and expands beyond borders of musical genre and style, inspired by the flora of Serralves Park. The octet includes some of the most interesting musicians from the North of Portugal, from groups such as the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra, Coreto Porta-Jazz, Drumming GP, Mécanosphère, Lost Gorbachevs and Lama, amongst many others.
Branches (Portugal) Susana Santos Silva (trumpet, baritone horn – Porta-Jazz); João Pedro Brandão (saxophones, flute – Porta-Jazz); Alberto Lopes (strings, non-conventional instruments – Sonoscopia); José Alberto Gomes (electronics – Sonoscopia); Hugo Raro (piano – Porta-Jazz); Henrique Fernandes (double bass, non-conventional instruments – Sonoscopia); (José Carlos Barbosa: double bass – Porta-Jazz); Gustavo Costa (percussion, non-conventional instruments – Sonoscopia)

2014-07-19

A new project from the Galician bassist, Baldo Martínez, aligned to the aesthetics of "European jazz". He is accompanied by three of Europe’s most dynamic musicians. Dominique Pifarely is heir to the lineage of French jazz violin music, that began with Stephane Grappelli and also encompasses Jean-Luc Ponty and Didier Lockwood. The Swiss trombone player, Samuel Blaser, has gained a deserved leading position amongst a new generation of trombone players. The Spanish percussion artist, Ramon Lopez, who lives in Paris, and is now a key part of the French jazz scene, has become one of the world’s least creative percussionists, through unusual combinations of drums, Indian tablas and Flamenco cajons. Cuarteto Europa is a project that blends "mainstream" and avant-garde jazz, defined by the poetic nature of its compositions, the "drive" of its improvised solos and the close interaction between the four members, providing a new perspective on a musician (Martinez, the main composer) who has previously performed with Joachim Kuhn, Louis Sclavis, Carlo Actis Dato and the Portuguese singer, Maria João. One of the world's most important violinists in the fields of jazz and free improvisation, Carlos "Zingaro" has been a pioneer of free jazz and psychedelic rock in Portugal, via the Plexus group. In this trio, he is accompanied by two American musicians, with whom he has worked before - Fred Lonberg-Holm (Vandermark 5, Boxhead Ensemble, Califone, Super Chunk, Wilco) and Chris Corsano (Flaherty / Corsano Duo, Evan Parker, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Six Organs of Admittance, Vibracathedral Orchestra), both of whom are active in jazz , improvised music and rock music. Interestingly, "Zingaro" and Lonberg-Holm are currently focusing on a second instrument - the guitar - which will undoubtedly enhance the group’s intense, powerful and unforgettable electronic music.

Jazz in the Park, 23rd Edition
DE 2014-07-05 a 2014-07-27

With a new direction, a new format - four concerts instead of the usual three - and a new curator (the essayist and jazz critic Rui Eduardo Paes), Jazz in the Park aims to highlight how jazz traditions have been rejuvenated as a result of emerging trends in the 21st century. Creative proposals that are currently emerging in the European continent include groups such as Pata Generators and Cuarteto Europe. The former returns to the principles of Alfred Jarry’s Pataphysics while the latter seeks a common language between musicians from Spain, France and Switzerland. The programme also includes a pioneer in the field of improvisation in Portugal - Carlos "Zingaro" - who will play alongside two exponential figures of nonconformist American jazz and rock - Fred Lonberg-Holm and Chris Corsano. There will also be a concert by a large-scale "ensemble", featuring some of the finest musicians from Porto - combining members of the Porta-Jazz and Sonoscopia associations - who ignore distinctions between "mainstream" and the avant-garde, and instead draw inspiration from the rich flora of Serralves Park. Starting with its 23rd edition, on every weekend in July, Jazz in the Park will be the same, but different ... ?

Jazz in the Park 2014: Norbert Stein Pata Generators
2014-07-05

Pata Generators is one of the most recent configurations of the Pata Music project, created by the German composer and saxophonist, Norbert Stein. As the name implies, the project’s main source of inspiration is "pataphysics” – a pseudoscience / pseudo-philosophy developed by the playwright, poet and novelist Alfred Jarry (which he described as "the science of imaginary solutions'). Pataphysics is based on the idea of paradox and the absurd that marked literature and the arts in the first half of the twentieth century (key "pataphysicists” included Eugéne Ionesco, Juan Miró, Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp) and that continues to have influence today. Three current examples in the world of music include Boris Vian, Soft Machine and Acid Mothers Temple. Adopting a chamber jazz format, this quintet situates itself between jazz tradition and an innovative approach, with omnipresent humour.

CARLOS BICA & AZUL
Carlos Bica – double bass Frank Mobus-guitar Jim Black - drums
"Things About" is the title of the latest album by Carlos Bica and his trio AZUL, released in October 2012 by the Clean Feed label.
If you ask a foreigner to name one Portuguese musician in the field of jazz and improvised music the answer is often ... Carlos Bica. In various contexts, he has spread the sweet perfume of his double bass and his songs charting the seven corners the world. Among his various musical projects and beyond his participation in other areas, such as theatre, dance and cinema, his trio AZUL, involving guitarist Frank Möbus and drummer Jim Black, has become the hallmark of this bassist and composer. Bica commenced his personal discography in 1996 alongside these two musicians, who already form an integral part of the project’s musical personality. Both the album and group were called Azul. Working alongside the musicians Frank Möbus (guitar) and Jim Black (drums), Carlos Bica created the ideal showcase for his compositions. The trio has stayed together and matured its musical identity - which is now blurred with that of Carlos Bica - and it was via the group that the double bass player once again revealed remarkable results in 1999, with Twist, in 2003, with Look What They've Done To My Song; and with Believer, in 2006. During this period he has also released other albums that have contributed to enrichment of the Portuguese musical universe, such as "Diz", "A Chama do Sol"" or "Single".
15 years since the release of his first album, Bica has returned to the studio with his longtime companions, to record what will be the fifth album from this trio, which keeps its original lineup intact, in a rare empathy that has contributed to Carlos Bica’s international recognition.

MASTERCLASS WITH CARLOS BICA, FRANK MÖBUS AND JIM BLACK
2013-07-27

The masterclass is aimed at musicians or anyone interested in all areas of musical expression. This initiative aims to create an open dialogue with the audience and try to respond to a wide array of issues related to group-based musical practice. The topics addressed will include musical creativity, composition, group performance, and knowing how to listen. Bica, Möbus and Black will share their individual and collective experiences with the audience. In 1996, Carlos Bica released his first album as a bandleader in Portugal. It was a breath of fresh air within the Portuguese music scene and had serious repercussions internationally – revealing new potential musical directions within the field of instrumental music. The album was called "Azul", that was also the name of the group. Working alongside musicians Frank Möbus and Jim Black, Carlos Bica created the ideal showcase for his compositions. The trio has stayed together since then and matured its musical identity - which is now blurred with that of Carlos Bica. NELSON CASCAIS – Mingus Project
Nelson Cascais - double bass Diogo Duque - trumpet Ricardo Toscano - saxophones Victor Zamora - Piano Vasco Furtado - drums When, twenty years ago, I first placed the vinyl record on the turntable and heard the song Pithecanthropus Erectus, something changed inside me.
It was something unlike anything I’d ever heard, with such specific energy, intensity and loudness ... that it grabbed me and I decided to become a jazz bassist.
I consider that Charles Mingus is one of the most important North American musicians of the twentieth century, a leading jazz musician, who was more than just a great double bass player – he was an outstanding composer.
His extensive work, created over nearly six decades, strongly rooted in the Blues and Gospel music, in the Jazz of Ellington, Bird and Monk, influenced by the music of Schoenberg and Stravinsky, often served as a vehicle for protests against racial and political causes, simultaneously traditional and avant-garde, sweet and aggressive - reflecting his own complex and unstable personality.
For many years I dreamt about putting together a band that could pay tribute to this musical genius and I finally achieved this goal with a group of outstanding young musicians who dedicated themselves to this great adventure with tremendous fire and passion: The Mingus Project

JOSÉ MENEZES 100 Umbrellas - Improvised Journey into the world of Erik Satie
José Menezes - saxophones Gonçalo Marques - trumpet Mário Delgado - guitars Carlos Barretto - double bass José Salgueiro - drums
Erik Satie wasn’t just an eccentric composer, who lived most of his life in a musty attic and attributed unlikely titles to his compositions. He was a creative visionary who, with extreme elegance and irony, circumvented the prevailing musical conventions of his era.? Masterfully manipulating the listener’s expectations and creating an unprecedented musical and sound universe, Satie’s music has maintained a transversal influence across all fields of artistic production.? Many of the core elements of Erik Satie’s music, are also, in my view, associated to the language of improvised music. Dissonance, mood, a taste for modal exploration, the unpredictability of sound movements, constant dialogue between the obvious and the absurd are some of the elements via which the "100 UMBRELLAS" project establishes a bridge between Satie’s music and contemporary Jazz . It isn’t hard to imagine Satie and Monk talking at the same table in a Parisian cafe. It isn’t hard to imagine Satie with his fingers caressing the old piano of any jazz club.
We can imagine .... José Menezes

Jazz in the Park 2013, 22nd edition
DE 2013-07-14 a 2013-07-28

In
line with the programming principle of bringing together the best
international musicians and the best national projects, this year’s
edition will highlight Portuguese musicians, offering them one of the
most prestigious stages to present their work and an incentive to
persevere in their creative process. The
presentation of the project ‘100 Umbrellas’, a work by saxophonist José
Menezes based on the music of Eric Satie, underscores two crucial
aspects of the reality of Portuguese jazz: experimentation and the
clandestine existence to which this type of exploratory work is often
condemned. The
band ‘Mingus Project’, led by double bass player Nelson Cascais, points
to an essential pillar of jazz: generational renewal and musical
apprenticeship, through the double perspective of academic and
experiential learning. A professor at ESML, Nelson Cascais gathered
around the musical legacy of one of the greatest jazz composers, Charles
Mingus, some of his most outstanding pupils, who now ensure an
indispensable continuity. This renewal is deeper and faster the more it
is built upon the daily musical and human sharing of experience
accumulated by ‘veteran’ musicians. Jazz
in the Park 2013 will close with Carlos Bica’s ‘Trio Azul’. The
presence of this musician evokes an historical reality which has
decisively helped to create and consolidate the universality of jazz
across the board — the intercontinental artistic migration that brought
jazz musicians from the USA to Europe (and then to Asia) and which,
afterwards, took European musicians to the Americas. Indeed, Carlos Bica
is a rare example of a Portuguese jazz musician ‘exiled’ in Europe
(Germany) where he became the leader of his own international trio
(together with a German and an American musician).
